Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The whole body is lacquered black and the pattern is cut back through it, so every flower and leaf reads as bright brass against the dark. Behind the flowers the ground is filled with fine parallel scratches, which keeps the metal there matte rather than mirrored. One stem on the left is picked out in dark red rather than brass. The neck is turned in alternating black and brass rings and the mouth flares out flat, like a trumpet.

What is it?

A vase is the upright vessel that holds cut flowers, narrow enough at the neck to hold a stem where it is put and wide enough at the mouth to let a spray open.

Also known as a guldasta, guldan, phooldan, flower vase or peetal vase.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The metal under the lacquer is brass all the way through and the vase weighs 500 g. The black is a surface coat, not a plating, and every cut line shows the same metal underneath.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Very close. The cutting is worked by hand, so the number of flowers on a stem and the run of the fine ground lines differ, and the red picked out on one branch may sit somewhere else.

How big is it really?

We have not measured it, so the page carries no width or height. That is deliberate. An estimate a couple of centimetres out is worse than an honest gap, particularly for a piece going onto a shelf that is already full. The weight above is measured. Ask and we will put a tape to this one.

Will it tarnish?

Barely. The lacquer seals most of the surface and only the cut lines are bare brass, so those go slowly warmer over months while the black stays as it is.

Will the black rub off?

Not with normal handling. It lifts if you take a scouring pad or a brass polish to it, so keep both away and wipe the vase with a dry cloth instead.

Can I put water in it?

Use a glass liner or a jar inside. Water standing in bare brass leaves a mark, and any that runs down the outside sits in the cut lines and dulls the black.
