Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The rim is turned out flat and wide, a good finger across, and it is left plain where the rest of the bowl is worked. Below it two bands of relief run the whole way round, palmettes and leaf scrolls standing proud of the wall. The same band shows again on the inside face just under the rim, which is where a bowl stamped on one side only would be smooth.

What is it?

An urli is the wide shallow bowl filled with water at a doorway or on a low table, so that flower heads and a lit diya float where everyone coming in can see them.

Also known as an uruli, urli bowl, varpu, floating flower bowl or peetal urli.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass urli
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. It weighs 1,300 g for a bowl this wide, more than a thin spun shell of the same span would come to. A kitchen scale is the quickest check on the day it lands.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The form and the two bands match. The relief is worked by hand, so the pattern does not close perfectly where it meets itself, and where that join falls differs bowl to bowl.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. Bare brass darkens, and it darkens first in the recesses of the relief. Rubbing the raised leaves back to bright and leaving the ground dark is what gives the bands their depth.

Is it hammered?

No. There are no hammer facets on this bowl at all. The surface work is raised relief in two bands, and a matching band shows inside under the rim, which hammering does not produce.

Can I fill it with water?

Yes. The capacity has not been measured, so there is no figure on the page. Empty and dry it every few days so a water line does not set itself into the brass.
