Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The relief is cast, not cut. Every arm is filled with curved strokes that sweep out from the middle, and where the four arms cross a small open rosette stands proud of them. A plain raised border follows the outline the whole way round. The loop at the top is part of the same casting.

What is it?

The swastik is the four-armed auspicious mark drawn or fixed at the threshold of an Indian home at Diwali and at the start of a new undertaking. We describe the practice; we make no claim about outcomes.

Also known as a swastika, sathiya, swastik wall decor or pital swastik.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass swastik
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is the brass solid or plated?

Solid, cast in one piece with the hanging loop. A plated version of this size would come in well under 200 g, so a kitchen scale is the quickest test you can run at home.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The pattern comes from a mould, so it repeats, but the filing and polishing after casting are done by hand and the rosette at the centre picks up light differently on each one.

Where should it be placed?

A swastik is usually fixed at the main door, above or beside the frame, or on the wall of the mandir. Households differ on this and we would not tell you your practice.

Is it solid or hollow?

Solid metal through the arms and the centre. The pattern is raised on the front face, the back is plain, and none of the 200 g comes from anything other than brass.
