Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Seven cups sit loose in the base with their rims almost touching, and the slim spoon lies across three of them. The lid carries all of the pattern work, a floral band cut in rings from the knob out to the plain edge.

What is it?

A supari box is the round compartmented box passed after a meal, each cup holding one mukhwas so supari, saunf and elaichi stay separate.

Also known as a supari dabbi, mukhwas box, betel nut box or peetal dabba.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass supari box
  • 1 engraved brass lid
  • 7 loose inner cups
  • 1 brass spoon
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The base, the seven cups and the lid are all brass sheet, and the wall holds its round with the box empty. The weight on the listing is wrong and is being rechecked.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The current image was taken on a shop counter with stock behind it, so treat it as a guide to the form and not to the colour. The lid pattern also shifts a little from box to box.

Is it tin lined?

No lining. The cups are bare brass. Dry supari, saunf and elaichi sit in them without reacting. Anything sticky or damp will mark the metal.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Dry mouth fresheners only. Anything wet or sour will stain the cups, and the cups are deep enough that scrubbing a mark out of the floor is awkward.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

No. Lift the seven cups out and wash them by hand with the base, the lid and the spoon, then dry everything before the cups go back. Water trapped under a cup will mark the floor of the box.
