Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Seven cups sit in the base with their walls touching, and each one lifts straight out. They are plain brushed brass inside and deep rather than shallow, so a spoon of dhania goes in without heaping over the rim. The lid is the only worked surface, floral scroll running over the whole face out to a plain border, and it comes up on a small mushroom knob turned on a stem. The spoon has a filigree handle and lies flat inside with the lid on.

What is it?

A masala dabba is the one container a cook opens instead of a shelf of jars, its inner cups sitting free in a lidded body so haldi, jeera and mirch stay apart but travel to the stove together.

Also known as a masaladani, round spice box, masala tin, anjarai petti or peetal masala dabba.

What is in the box?
  • 1 round brass masala dabba with lid
  • 7 loose inner cups
  • 1 brass spoon
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The base, the seven cups, the lid and the spoon are all brass, and 1,100 g spread across ten separate parts is more than a plated shell of the same width could weigh.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The lid pattern is worked piece by piece and the brushed body takes light differently on every box, so the scroll will not fall in the same place twice.

Is it tin lined?

No lining. The seven bowls are plain brass and dry spices sit in them without trouble. The habit to avoid is spooning in a wet masala paste and closing the lid on it.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Dry masalas only. Wet or sour contents will stain the cups and take on a metallic edge, and the deep straight walls make a stain harder to scrub out than a shallow bowl would.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the shine off brass and leave it grey and blotchy. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry it with a cloth before it goes back beside the stove.

Do the cups lift out?

All seven come straight out. They sit loose in the base rather than being fixed to it, so the box washes in parts and a cup can be swapped between haldi and jeera without emptying the rest.
