Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The hammering here is not the usual scatter of dimples. The marks are struck in tight horizontal rows of small flat facets that circle the body and climb the dome of the lid, and the rows go out of step where one course of blows overtakes the next. A plain turned band sits at the top of the base and the lid drops over it. The knob is a small ball on a short collared stem.

What is it?

A roti box is the round lidded container rotis go into straight off the tawa, deep enough to take a full stack and closed all the way round so the steam that keeps them soft stays inside.

Also known as a roti dabba, chapati box, casserole, peetal roti dabba or roti server.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass roti box with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.
How was it made?
  • Hand Hammered

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 800 g in a box this size is sheet brass with weight in it, and a plated tin of the same shape would flex under a thumb pressed against the wall.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The hammering is struck by hand, so the pattern of the marks, the width of the plain bands and the depth of the polish all shift a little from one to the next.

Is it tin lined?

No, it is bare brass inside. Rotis go in hot and come out the same evening, which is what the box is built for. A stack left in overnight sweats, and it is the damp that marks brass rather than the bread.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. It is built for dry stacked rotis. Curd and pickle sitting against bare brass will stain the inside and pick up a metallic taste from it within a few hours.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the shine off brass and leave it grey and blotchy. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry it with a cloth before it goes back on the shelf.

How many rotis does it hold?

That depends on how wide you roll them, and we have not measured the lid, so there is no diameter on the page. It is deep enough for a full stack rather than for two or three, which is what the domed lid buys you.
