Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The engraving covers the lid edge to edge and stops dead at the plain turned band on its rim. A small rosette sits at the centre, with ring after ring of scrolling leaf work opening out from it and a wider border carried right to the lip. Nothing is cut into the base at all. That wall is turned plain, holds fine horizontal lathe lines, swells at the waist and draws back in to the foot.

What is it?

A roti box is the shallow lidded tin that carries the day's rotis from the kitchen to the table, sized by the width of a rolled roti rather than by volume, and closed so the stack does not dry out.

Also known as a roti dabba, chapati box, casserole, peetal roti dabba or roti server.

What is in the box?

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. A plated box of the same width would come in well under 800 g, so a kitchen scale answers the question on the day it arrives without anyone having to take our word for it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The lid is cut by hand and the satin on the base is worked on a wheel, so the weight of the pattern and the depth of the finish shift a little from one box to the next.

Is it tin lined?

No lining, plain brass inside. Most households line it with a clean cloth anyway, which keeps the rotis off the metal and holds the steam in at the same time.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Keep it to dry stacked rotis. Anything sour left standing against bare brass picks up a metallic edge within a few hours and leaves a mark on the wall that scrubbing will not lift.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the satin off brass and leave it grey and blotchy, and detergent settles into the cut lines of the pattern. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry it.

Will the engraving wear off?

No. The lines are cut into the metal rather than printed on it, so they outlast the polish. What will change is the colour in them, because the recesses darken faster than the flat of the lid does.
