Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The lid is domed and carries two bands of cast pattern, a running key fret at the crown and a row of scrolls below it, with a ring of round holes punched between them for the smoke. The bowl underneath is left plain and unworked. Two wings scroll up from the sides and come down again to feet that touch the shelf, holding the bowl clear of it. The peacock on top perches on a turned collar with its tail curling back over its head.

What is it?

A loban dhoop dani is the lidded, pierced vessel in which loban or dhoop resin is burned over a coal, the holes in the lid letting the smoke out while the ash stays down in the bowl.

Also known as a loban daan, dhoopdani, sambrani cup or pital dhoop stand.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass loban dhoop dani bowl
  • 1 pierced brass lid with peacock top
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and cast rather than spun. Bowl, lid and top together weigh 750 g, well past what a plated shell of the same size would come to, and a kitchen scale will tell you so in a second.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, not identical. The lid pattern is cast and then cleaned up by hand, so the holes vary a little in size and the darkening that sits in the key fret is deeper on some pieces than others.

Is this the same as an agarbatti stand?

No. An agarbatti stand holds burning incense sticks upright and catches the ash in a tray. A dhoop dani is a covered bowl for loose loban or dhoop resin burned over a coal, the smoke coming up through the lid.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Let it go cold first. Tip the ash out, wipe the bowl with a dry cloth, and lift any resin that has set hard with warm water and a soft brush. Dry the inside fully before the lid goes back on.

Will the brass get too hot to hold?

Yes. Brass carries heat, and the bowl, the feet and the side wings all warm through once a coal is in there. Move it with a cloth over the wings, or leave it to cool where it stands.
