Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

She stands over the calf, which reaches up under her belly with its head turned in to feed. A rosette sits between her horns and her ears are cast as open rings, so light passes through them. The cloth over her back carries a small figure in relief. The oval plate under her is edged with a twisted rope line.

What is it?

Kamdhenu is the cow shown with her calf feeding beneath her, the gau mata form kept in a home mandir, and the calf is what separates the murti from a plain cow figure.

Also known as a Gau Mata murti, cow and calf idol, Kamadhenu statue or pital gaay murti.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Kamdhenu murti with calf
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass. The legs and the calf are thin sections and still bring the piece to 350 g, which a plated shell of this size could not do. Weigh it when it lands and the number settles it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The rosette on the forehead, the relief on the cloth and the rope edge of the plate are cut by hand, so their crispness and the tone of the polish vary from one murti to the next.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Better not. Water runs into the gap between the cow and the calf and sits there out of reach of a cloth, and unlacquered brass left wet will darken in that pocket first. Wipe it dry instead.
