Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The two bodies are the same shape, the same scalloped rim, the same engraved leaf field, the same turned stem, and only the colour tells them apart. One takes a cream ground with flowers in blue, pink and red; the other a coral ground with the flowers in blue and white. Under the rim both carry a deep maroon band with the pattern left in gold, and the engraved lines show through the colour as a fine cut grid.

What is it?

A footed bowl is an open bowl raised on a short turned stem, made to hold sweets, dry fruit or flowers at a height the table does not already have from its flat dishes.

Also known as katoras, footed bowls, dry fruit bowls, pedestal bowls or peetal katori set.

What is in the box?
  • 1 hand painted brass footed bowl, cream ground
  • 1 hand painted brass footed bowl, coral ground
How do I look after it?
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and nothing else. Dry it straight away.
  • The colour is a surface layer over the metal. Lemon, salt, tamarind and brass polish all lift it — the same things that bring bare brass back to a shine will take the pattern off this piece. Keep them away from the painted areas.
  • Any bare brass on the foot, rim or underside can be cleaned the normal way with lemon and salt. Work around the colour, not over it.
  • Do not soak it, do not scrub it, and keep steel wool and scouring pads away from it entirely.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Keep it out of long direct sunlight. Applied colour fades where bare brass would only darken.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, engraved and then painted. The stem and the underside of the foot are left bare on both bowls, so you can see the metal the colour is sitting on without turning anything over.

Will the two bowls be different colours?

Yes, and it is meant to be. One comes on a cream ground and one on coral, both over the same engraved leaf field, so they read as a pair without matching.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The two grounds and the engraving will match. The flowers will not, because each bloom is placed by hand, so the blues and reds fall in different spots and the count varies bowl to bowl.

How big is it really?

Not yet measured, and we would rather say so than estimate. A screen flattens scale badly, and a small piece and a large one photograph much the same. The weight above is real. Tell us the space you are filling and we will measure the piece and tell you whether it fits.

Will it tarnish?

Only where the brass is bare. The stems and the foot underside will dull and darken, while the painted ground holds its colour. Clean the bare metal with a dry cloth and keep polish off the paint.

How many do I need?

Two is a set and a set is enough for a console or a mandir step. A long dining table takes two sets, one at each end, so the pair does not sit stranded in the middle of the cloth.
