Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Only the top half is hammered. Above the raised rib at the waist the metal is beaten into broad flat facets; below it the belly is left smooth and shows fine turning lines from the lathe, so the pot changes texture at a single line you can find with a thumbnail. The lid is a brimmed disc rather than a cap, wide enough to overhang the mouth, and that brim is where it gets lifted from rather than the small ball at its centre.

What is it?

A ghee pot is the small lidded vessel ghee is kept in beside the stove, low and wide-mouthed so a spoon reaches the bottom of it once the ghee has set firm in cool weather.

Also known as a ghee dani, gheedani, ghee container, ghee jar or peetal ghee pot.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass ghee pot
  • 1 brimmed brass lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and light at 250 g because the pot is small rather than because the wall is thin. Put it on a kitchen scale the day it arrives and the number settles the question for you.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The collar is struck by hand, so the facets fall in a different pattern on every pot, and the line where the hammering meets the smooth belly sits a shade higher or lower.

Is it tin lined?

No lining, and a ghee pot rarely has one. Ghee is not sour and sits in bare brass without reacting. Water is what you keep out of it.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Ghee only. Curd and pickle sitting against bare brass will stain the inside wall and pick up a metallic edge, and the mouth is too narrow to scrub a stain back out of.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the shine off brass and leave it grey and blotchy. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry it with a cloth before it goes back beside the stove.

Does a spoon come with it?

No. The pot ships as a body and a lid. There is no slot cut in the lid for a spoon handle either, so a ghee spoon lives outside the pot rather than standing in it.
