Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The branch is the hanger. It runs the full width of the leaf as a cast twig with cut ends and one round hole through the middle, and the leaf hangs off it with two open gaps either side of the stem. Ganesha is raised almost to the depth of a finger at the trunk, the ears combed into ridges and a round mark set on the brow. Where the relief leaves off, the leaf is cut with veins and short strokes.

What is it?

A Ganesha on leaf is a flat plaque in which the elephant-headed figure is cast or raised on the form of a peepal leaf, hung at a doorway or in a hall. We describe the practice; we make no claim about outcomes.

Also known as a leaf ganesh, patta ganesh, peepal leaf ganesh or pital ganesh.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Ganesha leaf plaque
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is the brass solid or plated?

Solid, and cast rather than pressed from sheet. A pressed plaque this wide would weigh a fraction of 1,000 g, which is the whole reason the weight is printed on the page.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The veins and strokes across the leaf are cut by hand after casting, so their spacing and depth change, and the polish takes differently on each face.

Where should it be placed?

A leaf plaque of this kind is usually hung at the entrance, in a hall, or above the mandir shelf where it faces the room. Households differ on this and we would not tell you your practice.

Is it solid or hollow?

Solid cast metal throughout, with no filler behind the relief. It is a plaque rather than a figure, so it has a flat back and hangs close against the wall.

How does it hang?

From the hole through the branch. The branch is cast in one with the leaf rather than fixed on afterwards, so a single nail or screw head carries the load through solid metal.
