Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The leaf is left as a mirror, so the only broken surface on it is the veining, cut in as deep V-strokes that run out from the spine and stop short of the edge. Ganesha sits in the middle in high relief, crowned, the trunk curling to the left over a scrolled shawl, with a small mouse at the foot. The stem is drawn up into a closed ring, and that ring is the fixing point; it takes a nail on its own.

What is it?

A Ganesha on leaf is a flat plaque in which the elephant-headed figure is cast or raised on the form of a peepal leaf, hung at a doorway or in a hall. We describe the practice; we make no claim about outcomes.

Also known as a leaf ganesh, patta ganesh, ganesh wall hanging or pital ganesh.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Ganesha leaf plaque
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is the brass solid or plated?

Solid. The plate is thin because it is a leaf, but it is brass all the way through and the ring is cast with it. At 800 g a scale will tell you the same thing in a second.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Not exactly. A mirror polish shows every hand that touched it, so the fall of light across the leaf differs piece to piece, as does the depth of each cut vein.

Where should it be placed?

A leaf plaque of this kind is usually hung at the entrance, in a hall, or above the mandir shelf where it faces the room. Households differ on this and we would not tell you your practice.

Is it solid or hollow?

Solid metal, flat at the back. The figure is raised at the front and there is no filler behind it, so what you lift is 800 g of brass and nothing else.

How is it fixed to the wall?

Through the cast ring at the top of the stem. The ring is part of the same casting rather than a fitting screwed on afterwards, so one nail or screw head carries the whole 800 g.
