Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Cutting runs the whole height. At the neck, short chisel dashes are set in rows between ruled lines, tight at the top and opening out further down. On the belly, open flowers and long leaves are cut deep enough to hold shadow, and the ruled lines framing each band do not stay exactly parallel, which is what a hand-held graver does. Etched work would print the same line at the same depth all the way round. The mouth flares wide and is left plain and mirror bright, and so is the stepped ring foot, giving the eye two quiet ends to a busy middle. At 3 kg the weight sits low and a tall stem does not pull it over.

What is it?

A floor vase is the tall vessel that stands on the ground beside a doorway or a sofa rather than on a table, weighted low so a long stem of flowers does not tip it.

Also known as a guldasta, phooldan, tall flower vase, pital vase or corner floor vase.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and 3,000 g of it. Plated sheet at this height would flex when you lift the vase by the neck, and this does not. Stand it on a scale if you want the number confirmed at your end.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The shape and the run of the bands will match. Where each cut line falls will not, because the pattern is walked out by hand with a graver and every vase ends up with its own spacing.

How big is it really?

Not yet measured, and we would rather say so than estimate. A screen flattens scale badly, and a small piece and a large one photograph much the same. The weight above is real. Tell us the space you are filling and we will measure the piece and tell you whether it fits.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. Unlacquered brass darkens with the air in the room and the oil on your hands. The engraved lines go dark first because a cloth cannot reach into them, which is what makes the pattern read more strongly with age.

Can I put water and fresh flowers in it?

Not directly. Water standing in bare brass marks the inside wall and can weep at a seam. Drop a glass or plastic liner down the neck and stand the stems in that, or use dried stems and keep it empty.

Will it mark a wooden floor?

The foot is a plain brass ring with nothing under it, so grit caught beneath will scratch. Stick felt pads to the underside, or stand it on a mat, before you slide it into position.

How do I clean inside the neck?

You cannot reach it and you do not need to. Dust and polish the outside only. If something spills down the neck, tip it out, dry what you can with a cloth on a long stick and leave the mouth open.
