Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The oil pan sits out on one side, a small boat-shaped cup with its lip drawn to a point, and its whole weight rides on the peacock's body, which curls out of the base in one long S of beaded scrollwork. The bird's head turns back at the top and the neck runs past it into a hook that carries a small bell on a loose ring, well clear of the flame. The base is a plain disc combed with radial lines.

What is it?

A diya is the cup that holds oil and a cotton wick during pooja. Where the cup is cast onto a standing figure the lamp gains a front and a back, so it is set down facing the deity.

Also known as a mor diya, mayur deep, bell diya or pital deepak.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass peacock diya with a hanging bell
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The scrolled stem is the heaviest part of the 600 g and it has to be, because it holds the pan out to one side without the lamp leaning. A plated shell would not balance like that.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The shape will. The beading along the scroll is cast and then cleaned by hand, so the granules vary in size, and the bell hangs at whatever angle the ring settles into on the day.

Is this the same as a hanging ghanti?

No. A hanging ghanti is a bell on a chain, hung at a doorway or an arch and rung on the way in. Here the bell is a small fitting on a lamp, and the lamp is what the piece is for.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Wipe the pan out warm. Keep water away from the bell ring, where it sits and marks, and take soot off the beaded scrollwork with a dry brush rather than soaking it. Dry the base disc last.

Can I use ghee instead of oil?

Yes. The pan is small, so a spoon of ghee fills it. Clear the last of it out while the metal is warm, because a boat-shaped cup this narrow is awkward to scrape once the ghee has set.
