Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Dimples cover the body from the foot to the collar in close overlapping rows and stop dead at a plain turned band where the lid sits down. The lid itself is left mirror smooth, so the two surfaces read as different metals in the same light. The knob is a small turned button on a waisted stem.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A cookie jar is the tall lidded container biscuits, namkeen and dry snacks are tipped into and kept on a counter, deep rather than wide so it takes a full packet without being split between two tins.

Also known as a barni, biscuit jar, snack jar, peetal dabba or namkeen container.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass cookie jar with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.
How was it made?
  • Hand Hammered

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The dimples are struck into the sheet and show as bumps on the inside wall, which no plated skin would do, though at 350 g this is light gauge brass rather than a heavy cast jar.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The dimples are struck by hand, so their rows drift out of step in different places on every jar, and the mirror on the lid is polished a little deeper on some.

Is it tin lined?

No lining, bare brass inside. Biscuits and dry snacks keep well in it. Anything oily leaves a film on the wall that wants washing off rather than wiping.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Dry biscuits and namkeen only. The lid drops over a collar with no gasket in it, so nothing wet is held in properly, and sour food standing against bare brass marks the wall and takes a metallic edge.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

No. Hand wash with a mild liquid and a soft sponge, and dry it fully before the lid goes back on. Machine heat and detergent dull the mirror on the lid faster than anything else will.
