Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The pattern is not on everything. Bands of chevrons over dotted lines circle the filter and run round the outside of both dabara, while the two cups are left plain inside and out. The filter itself reads as two stacked drums with a joint line at the waist, and a slim press rod stands up through the lid to pack the grounds down. Every rim on the set is turned over and thickened, so nothing on it is a raw cut edge.

What is it?

Filter coffee is brewed in a two-chamber pot that drips overnight, then poured back and forth between a wide-rimmed dabara and a cup until the decoction and milk are cool enough to drink.

Also known as a dabara set, davara tumbler, kaapi filter, degree coffee set or peetal coffee filter.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass coffee filter with lid and press rod
  • 2 brass cups
  • 2 brass dabara
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. Five pieces come to 600 g, and the pattern is worked into the metal rather than printed on a coating, which would break up at the turned rim of a dabara long before the brass did.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The banding is worked by hand, so the point where one band closes on itself lands in a different place on every filter, and the satin finish takes light differently piece to piece.

Is it tin lined?

No. Bare brass in the filter and in the tumblers. Coffee left standing stains the inside a deeper gold; rinse and dry each part after use and the colour stays even.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. It is built for coffee. Sour contents sit badly against bare brass, and the filter has a seam at the waist between the two chambers that residue would settle into.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts flatten the satin finish and dull the banding, and the pierced plate inside wants a soft brush rather than a jet. Dry every part before the set is stacked.

How many do I need?

One set serves two. Two cups and two dabara come with a single filter, so a household of four either brews twice in a morning or keeps a second filter beside the first.
