Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Three bands of pattern run across the filter, each one a row of dots above a running wave, worked into brass that has been left satin rather than buffed bright. A slim press rod stands proud of the lid, the plunger that packs the grounds down. The two cups are tumblers rather than handled mugs, and each one sits in its own dabara, the wide brass bowl the coffee gets poured into to cool.

What is it?

A filter coffee set is the two-chamber brass drip pot with the wide-lipped bowl and tumbler pair that goes with it, the coffee brewed drop by drop in the pot and then poured between bowl and tumbler to cool.

Also known as a dabara set, davara tumbler, kaapi filter, peetal coffee filter or degree set.

What is in the box?

  • 2 brass tumblers
  • 2 brass dabara
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, not plated. A plated set shows base metal at the worked edge of the dabara rim where the sheet is drawn thinnest, and there is none of that here.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The current image is a marketing poster rather than a studio frame, so treat it as a guide to the contents and not to the colour. The brass is satin, and it will warm and darken from the day the set is unwrapped.

Is it tin lined?

No lining anywhere in the set. Coffee will darken the inside of the filter over the first few weeks. That is the brass doing what brass does, and lemon and salt takes it back.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. It is built for coffee. Sour contents sit badly against bare brass, and the filter has narrow seams between the chambers that residue would settle into.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts flatten the satin finish and dull the banded pattern, and the pierced plate needs a soft brush rather than a jet. Dry every part before the set is stacked.

How many do I need?

The set serves two. Two tumblers and two dabara come with one filter, so a household of four either brews twice in a morning or takes a second set.
