Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Shallow flutes run the length of the column and stop at a plain ring above the stepped foot, and a faint vertical seam shows where the casting was closed. Above the ring sits a ribbed bell, then a drum banded with raised discs, then the four lions back to back with the manes cut as rows of short tufts. The ridges have taken the polish and the recesses have not, which is where the depth of the casting shows.

What is it?

The Ashok Stambh is the four-lion capital that serves as the national emblem, with the lions seated back to back over a drum where a wheel sits between the carved animals, made in metal as a desk or shelf piece.

Also known as an ashoka pillar, lion capital, national emblem, state emblem or peetal ashok stambh.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Ashok Stambh
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and cast in one. The 650 g is what tells you, because a column this slender in plated sheet would weigh a quarter of that and would ring hollow when you tap the shaft.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The model is the same. How dark the recesses of the manes and the flutes sit will differ, since the polish is taken back by hand and stops at a different depth on every casting.

How big is it really?

Not yet measured, and we would rather say so than estimate. A screen flattens scale badly, and a small piece and a large one photograph much the same. The weight above is real. Tell us the space you are filling and we will measure the piece and tell you whether it fits.

Will it tarnish?

Yes, and unevenly. The flutes and the manes hold dirt and go dark first while the plain collar and the base stay bright, so it ends up looking older at the top than at the bottom.

Is it solid or hollow?

Solid through the column and the capital. At 650 g in this height there is no room for a hollow core, and the underside of the base is a flat disc rather than an open cavity.
