Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The veena lies across her lap, the gourd resting at her right knee and the peg head curving up past her left shoulder, held by the two lower hands. The lotus below is cut in two tiers, a cupped ring of petals under her and a flat spread beneath that, each petal engraved with a small lotus of its own.

What is it?

A Saraswati murti carries the veena, the long-necked stringed instrument that names her as the deity of learning and music, and she is seated on an open lotus with four arms rather than two.

Also known as a Vidya Devi murti, Saraswati Mata idol, Sharda maa murti or peetal Saraswati.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Saraswati murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass. At 250 g the piece is dense for its height, and the raised arms would snap on a thin plated shell. A kitchen scale on the day it arrives is the test to run.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. Every lotus petal on the base is engraved by hand, so the flower inside each one differs slightly, and the polish sits deeper in some petals than others from one murti to the next.

How tall is it really?

We have not put a tape to it, so there is no height on this page and we will not print an estimate. The weight is the number we do have, and on a cast figure it tells you more than height does, because two murtis of the same height can differ by a kilo. If the height decides it, write to us and we will measure this one before you order.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Better not. The open lotus holds water between its petals and under the seat, and unlacquered brass left wet there stains where a cloth cannot reach. Dry the murti after pooja instead.
