Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The trunk splits low into two stems and a curtain of thin aerial roots hangs between them. Every leaf is a separate tongue of brass with a midrib and veins pressed into it, and they overlap thickly enough that the canopy reads as one mass until you are close. Small birds sit in the branches, one on the upper right limb and one near the centre of the crown. The roots splay at the bottom and are the base, so there is no plate underneath.

What is it?

A tree of life is a branching tree worked in metal and kept as a decor object, the whole crown cast as one piece so the leaves read as a mass from across a room and separate up close.

Also known as a tree showpiece, banyan tree decor, pital tree figurine, wishing tree or tree statue.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, cast as one piece at 1,200 g. Nearly all of that sits in the trunk and the root spread, which is why a tree with a canopy this wide does not topple. A scale confirms it in a second.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The tree will be the same casting. The antique finish is worked into the leaves by hand, so how dark the recesses read against the leaf faces changes from one tree to the next.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes, on the bright leaf faces, which are the parts a cloth reaches. The dark in the leaf veins and between the roots is the antique finish, so keep lemon, salt and tamarind off it or the canopy flattens out.

Does it stand on its own?

Yes. The roots splay out at the bottom and are the base, with no separate plate under them. On a flat shelf it stands without help, and on a soft cloth it leans slightly until you settle it.

Can I hang it on a wall?

No. There is no hook, no keyhole and no flat back, because the roots are cast to spread on a surface and the trunk is round in section. Treating it as a wall panel will bend the outer branches.
