Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Colour sits in the recesses rather than over the surface. An orange line follows the border of the saddle cloth, fills the rosette at its centre and runs along the fringe under the collar, and the raised brass beside it stays polished. Two rows of cast bells ride on the neck, each one a separate lump of metal with its own shadow. The eyes are painted black and the head turns to the right rather than facing square on.

What is it?

A Nandi murti is the bull that faces the Shiva shrine, cast couchant with the forelegs folded under the chest and the head lifted and turned, so the form sits low and wide rather than upright.

Also known as a nandi bail, shiva nandi, nandi statue, peetal nandi or basava murti.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Nandi murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and nothing else. Dry it straight away.
  • The colour is a surface layer over the metal. Lemon, salt, tamarind and brass polish all lift it — the same things that bring bare brass back to a shine will take the pattern off this piece. Keep them away from the painted areas.
  • Any bare brass on the foot, rim or underside can be cleaned the normal way with lemon and salt. Work around the colour, not over it.
  • Do not soak it, do not scrub it, and keep steel wool and scouring pads away from it entirely.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Keep it out of long direct sunlight. Applied colour fades where bare brass would only darken.
How was it made?

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The colour is painted on, not plated over, and the casting comes in at 1,400 g. Put it on a kitchen scale the day it arrives and the number tells you there is metal all the way through.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The colour is laid in by hand, so the width of the orange line and how far it carries along the collar fringe shift a little from one casting to the next.

How tall is it really?

We have not put a tape to it, so there is no height on this page and we will not print an estimate. The weight is the number we do have, and on a cast figure it tells you more than height does, because two murtis of the same height can differ by a kilo. If the height decides it, write to us and we will measure this one before you order.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Water will lift the painted colour over time. Keep abhishek for a plain brass murti and wipe this one down with a dry cloth instead, which is what the paint asks for.

Will the colour rub off?

Not from handling. It sits in the recesses where a cloth does not reach hard. Metal polish dragged across the saddle will take it out, so keep polish to the plain brass and go round the colour.
