Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The figure and the throne are finished differently. The crawling Krishna is polished to a mirror while the singhasan is left softer, so the two read apart from across a room. The backrest is pierced right through in a lattice of flowers and scrollwork with a lion face at the top, and the side rails are cut the same way and finished with four buds. A peacock perches on each front corner with its tail hanging down over the platform edge. Under the platform a row of engraved arches runs the width of the apron, and the whole throne stands on four cast feet. The eyes of the figure are filled white against the brass.

What is it?

Laddu Gopal is Krishna as an infant, shown crawling with a sweet in one hand, and a singhasan is the backed throne the figure is set on inside a home mandir.

Also known as a Bal Gopal murti, Bal Krishna idol, pital Laddu Gopal statue or Krishna singhasan set.

  • 1 brass singhasan
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. Both parts are cast brass and together they come to 2,100 g. The throne carries most of that, which is what keeps it steady once the figure is on the platform. Weigh it and see.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The pierced work is cut by hand, so the flowers in the lattice sit at slightly different spacings on every backrest, and the polish on the figure can read warmer or cooler than the frame.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

On the figure, yes. Take it off the platform first, then wash and dry it, and keep the water away from the pierced backrest, where it sits in the cut-outs and dries into pale marks.

Does the figure lift off the throne?

It is a separate casting and sits on the platform rather than being fixed into it, so it can be lifted off to be dressed or washed and set back on the engraved rosette in the middle.

What are the white eyes?

The eyes are filled white against the brass. Whether that is enamel or paint has not been confirmed with the maker, so until it is settled treat them as a surface that should not be scrubbed.

Will the pierced work catch dust?

It will. The backrest is cut right through and the lattice holds dust in the corners of the flowers. A dry brush gets more out of it than a cloth does, and it wants doing more often than the figure.
