Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The floor of the thali drops away from a broad rolled rim into a well deep enough to hold dal without it creeping to the edge, and the step between rim and well catches light as a bright ring. Both katoris are hemispheres with a rolled lip. The third bowl is wider and shallower, the shape a dry sabzi goes into rather than a liquid. The glass narrows slightly toward its base. Every piece is turned on a lathe, and fine concentric rings show under the satin skin when you tilt one to the window.

What is it?

Kansa is bronze, an alloy of copper and tin. A thali set is the plate with the katoris, glass and spoon that go on it, sold together as the place setting one person eats from.

Also known as a kansa dinner set, bronze thali set, kansya bhojan set or bell metal thali.

How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this kansa solid or plated?

Solid. The six pieces weigh 1,500 g together, and a plated set of the same size would come in well under that figure, so a kitchen scale settles the question on the day it arrives.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. Each piece is turned and finished by hand, so the depth of the well, the width of the rim and the tone of the satin surface all shift a little from one set to the next.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is bronze, copper alloyed with tin, while brass is copper alloyed with zinc. Kansa rings when it is struck, sits heavier for its size and carries a paler gold colour than brass does.

Will it discolour with sour food?

Yes, in patches. Lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle lift the surface tone wherever they sit. Rinse and dry the piece soon after the meal and the mark comes back out with normal cleaning.

How many do I need?

One set per person eating. The six pieces are a single place setting rather than a serving set, so a family of four buys four and adds separate serving bowls for the middle of the table.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salt and heat leave kansa grey and blotchy. Warm water, a soft sponge and a dry cloth straight after, and the surface keeps its even satin tone.

Does the thali have divisions?

No. The well is one undivided dish, so rice and roti share the floor while the wet items sit in the katoris. The rolled rim is what keeps a thin dal on the plate.
