Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

A band of chased flowers and interlace runs right round the lid where the dome turns in, and above it the metal is left plain but for the fine lines the lathe left. The top is drawn out long and pointed, a lift handle first and an ornament second. The rim of the bowl flares out under it.

What is it?

An offering bowl on a pedestal foot is the lidded vessel prasad, sweets or flowers are carried and set down in at the mandir, raised so it stands above the plates round it.

Also known as a horai, prasad bowl, naivedya bowl, pital offering stand or lidded pooja bowl.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and unplated. The bowl, the lid and the pedestal are all brass at 300 g for the three together, and the weight sits in the foot rather than in the lid.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The floral band is chased into the lid by hand, so the flowers do not sit at the same spacing on every piece, and the join where the band meets itself falls in a different place.

Is this the same as a dhoop dani?

No. The band on the lid is raised work and not pierced, so nothing burns inside it. The bowl is closed and is meant for prasad, sweets or flowers rather than for coals.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Empty it, wipe both parts dry, and leave the lid off while it is stored so nothing shuts in damp. Lemon and salt on the plain surfaces, then a soft brush through the chased band.
