Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

He kneels on one knee with the other drawn up, and the mace rests back against the left shoulder, its head a ball of raised beadwork held in a closed fist. Behind the head a halo of pointed lotus petals fans out from the crown. The pedestal holds the closest work. Its top is cut as a fine woven lattice, and the skirt below carries a band of scrolling flowers between two rows of beading.

What is it?

A murti of Hanuman is cast either upright or kneeling, and the kneeling form shows him at rest before Ram with the mace held rather than swung, the posture families keep in a home mandir.

Also known as a Bajrangbali murti, kneeling Hanuman idol, Maruti Nandan statue or pital Hanuman murti.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass. The piece weighs 350 g, most of it in the figure and the drum-shaped pedestal, and a kitchen scale on the day it arrives is the quickest test you can run.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The lattice on the pedestal top and the scrollwork on its skirt are cut by hand, so the spacing of the mesh and the depth of the flowers change a little between one murti and the next.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Better not. The lattice top of the pedestal traps water under the figure where no cloth reaches, and unlacquered brass left wet there darkens in patches. Wipe the murti dry instead.

Will dust catch in the pedestal?

It will. The lattice top and the scrollwork skirt hold fine dust, so a dry brush works better than a cloth. Keep water off it, because moisture left in the cuts leaves dark marks on bare brass.
