Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

At 300 g the whole group lifts with two fingers, and the base is where the work went. Its top is a diamond lattice cut right through, and a band of pierced scrollwork runs round all four sides below it, so light passes under the lion's feet. The mane is worked in separate curls rather than combed strokes, the tail loops back on itself in a closed ring, and three necklaces on the goddess read apart from one another.

What is it?

In the Sherawali form the goddess rides side saddle on her lion, one leg drawn up and the other resting against its shoulder, and a murti of the form is judged by how far the arms come away from the body before the finisher stops.

Also known as a sherawali murti, durga maa idol, singh vahini durga, pital durga or ambe maa ki murti.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, but light. 300 g is the whole group including the base, and the piece is worked fine rather than built heavy, so judge it by the depth of the piercing rather than by heft.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The lattice is the variable. It is pierced by hand, so the holes are not all the same size and the apron scroll meets itself slightly differently on each of the four sides, and on each casting.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

The brass is bare, so water is fine on the figure. The base is the catch. Its lattice holds a droplet in every hole, so tip it and take a cloth corner through afterwards or the base greys first.

Does the base come off?

No. The lion's feet, the lattice top and the pierced apron are one casting, so nothing unscrews and there is no felt underneath. Stand it on a mat if the shelf marks easily.
