Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The lion carries the whole murti. Its four legs are the only feet the piece has, so it stands on a shelf with nothing beneath. The mane is cut in parallel strokes that stop dead at a flat, mask-like face, while the goddess above is worked in far finer relief, a beaded arch behind her head and a third eye on the brow. Eight arms fan out and stay clear of one another, a curved sword topping one side and a trishul the other.

What is it?

A Durga murti sets the goddess on her lion, arms fanned in a ring behind the shoulders and a weapon in each hand. The lion is cast as part of the murti, never as a separate stand the figure lifts off.

Also known as a sherawali maa murti, durga statue, ambe maa idol, peetal durga or maa durga ki murti.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Durga murti with lion
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. A plated shell of the same size would weigh a fraction of 1,400 g, and the arms stand free of the body, which a thin plated casting cannot do without cracking at the shoulder.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The satin surface takes light differently from casting to casting, and the fine work on the crown and the beaded arch varies with how far the finisher took the file.

How tall is it really?

We have not put a tape to it, so there is no height on this page and we will not print an estimate. The weight is the number we do have, and on a cast figure it tells you more than height does, because two murtis of the same height can differ by a kilo. If the height decides it, write to us and we will measure this one before you order.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Yes. Bare brass takes water. Dry it fully afterwards, working a cloth corner into the gaps between the arms and under the lion's jaw, or those recesses go grey before the rest of it does.

Will it stand steady with no base?

Yes. All four of the lion's legs reach the shelf and the tail is cast clear of the floor, so the weight sits over the footprint rather than behind it. A felt pad under each paw stops it marking wood.
