Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Three vessels, and not one of them matches the next. The two outer tumblers stand on turned brass feet with a beaded edge, one hammered from the rim down, the other left plain above the waist and hammered below it. The middle one has no foot at all and carries a flat brass strap handle with a curled thumb tail, set close to the barrel. Every hammer facet catches light at a slightly different angle.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A tumbler is the handleless drinking vessel of the Indian table, taller than it is wide, filled from a jug and set down beside the plate rather than carried.

Also known as a copper glass, tamba tumbler, water glass or moscow mule mug.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. The three vessels weigh 400 g together, and a plated shell of the same size would come in well under that, so a kitchen scale settles the question on the day the box arrives.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two are struck the same. The hammer facets fall where the hand puts them, so the pattern shifts from vessel to vessel and even between the two footed tumblers in one box.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air. The bright pink turns brown and then deeper, fastest where fingers hold it. Lemon and salt bring the colour back in a minute, and left alone the patina simply stays.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Water sits in copper without harming the metal, and Indian households have kept it that way for a very long time. Rinse and dry the tumbler in the morning before you fill it again.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.

How many do I need?

One vessel per person drinking. Three covers a small family at the table, and a household that seats six usually takes two sets so the setting matches end to end.
