Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The hammering covers the body from the shoulder to the base in rows of round facets, struck deep enough to read as shallow cups rather than scratches. Above them the shoulder is left plain and the neck carries a cut thread. Under the cap sits a soft ring gasket, visible as a pale band when the lid is down.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A copper bottle is a screw-topped water flask, threaded at the neck so the cap tightens down onto a seal rather than resting loose on the rim the way a sleeve lid does.

Also known as a copper water bottle, tamba bottle, hammered jal patra or copper flask.

What is in the box?
  • 1 hammered copper bottle with screw cap
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
How was it made?

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. Each hammer strike moves the metal itself, which is why the facets stand as shallow cups on the outside and can be felt as bumps on the inside wall through the neck.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The rows of facets are struck one at a time, so their spacing and depth vary. Yours will carry the same pattern of round marks and not the same map of them.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air. On a hammered body the low points hold the change longest, so the bottle goes two-tone before it goes evenly brown. A cut lemon and salt reset it.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes. The metal is unaffected and water kept in copper is old Indian household practice. Empty and dry it in the morning, and unscrew the cap so the inside can air out.

How much does it hold?

We have not measured the capacity, so there is no millilitre figure on this page. Where the maker gives one we print it; here they have not, and we are not going to work it back from a photograph. Ask before you order and we will fill this one and measure it.
