Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The metal above and below the pattern is left as it came off the lathe, with fine turning lines still visible under the light. The band between covers most of the body, leaf and paisley scrollwork cut in fine lines and set out in vertical panels. The cap sits on a stepped collar.

What is it?

A copper bottle is the flask a household fills at night and carries out in the morning, tall and narrow rather than bellied, closed at the neck by a cap that seats on the shoulder.

Also known as a copper water bottle, tamba bottle, jal patra or patterned copper flask.

What is in the box?
  • 1 patterned copper bottle with cap
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. At 350 g empty the bottle weighs what copper sheet weighs, and the cut pattern goes into the metal itself rather than sitting on a coating that could lift at an edge.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The pattern band will match closely. What shifts is the colour, because copper leaves the polisher at a different point on the pink-to-brown range on every batch.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air, and a cut pattern darkens unevenly because the recesses hold what a cloth cannot reach. Many owners leave the lines dark on purpose and polish only the plain metal.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

The metal takes no harm from standing water, and storing water in copper is a long-standing Indian household practice. Empty it and dry the inside in the morning before the next fill.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.
