Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The engraving is cut rather than pressed, fine V-lines running out into leaves and stems over the belly and the neck, with turned rings marking the waist, the collar and the foot. The mouth flares wider than the belly, so a short bunch of stems falls open at the top instead of standing straight up in a bundle.

What is it?

A vase is an upright vessel with a mouth set above a wider belly, made to hold cut stems standing in water, and in brass it is as often kept empty for the form as it is filled.

Also known as a guldasta, phooldan, flower vase, bud vase or peetal guldan.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, spun and then engraved. A graver cuts into the metal itself, so the bright lines you see are brass under brass rather than a pattern printed onto a coating that would wear off the rim.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The shape will. The engraving will not repeat exactly, because the leaf lines are cut freehand and the bands do not always meet cleanly where they close at the back of the vase.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes, and standing water speeds it up. Bare brass takes a dark ring at the waterline inside, so change the water daily or drop a glass tube inside and keep the metal dry.
