Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The centre prong runs straight and the two outer prongs curl away from it and back in, all three finishing in fine points that read pinker than the shaft below. Under them a fluted collar carries two pierced openings, and a bow-tie cross piece is fitted over the plain rod halfway down.

What is it?

A trishul is the three-pronged staff carried by Shiva, kept in the home mandir as an emblem rather than as a working object, usually mounted upright on its own base.

Also known as a trishool, shiva trident, trident stand, pital trishul or mandir trishul.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass trishul on a stepped square base
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The prongs and the base are cast and the shaft is a solid rod, and at 250 g the base holds the piece upright without anything needed under it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. Each trishul is cast and then filed and polished by hand, so the curl of the outer prongs and the depth of the collar shift a little from one to the next.

Does it come apart from the base?

It photographs as one piece with the shaft seated into the base. We have not had one apart to check whether that joint unscrews, so treat it as fixed.

How do I clean it after pooja?

A dry cloth over the prongs and the shaft. Once the brass dulls, lemon and salt brings it back, but rinse the pierced collar well and dry it, because water sits in the openings.
