Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Body and lid are finished two different ways. The wall is struck all over in close rows of small dimples, while the lid has been buffed to a mirror and reflects the room back. There is no knob and no top. The dome steps up to a flat top and is lifted by the overhang at its edge, which drops over a plain turned collar at the mouth. The box is about as deep as it is wide, so a stack stands rather than lies.

What is it?

A roti box is the deep round container rotis are stacked into straight off the tawa, closed all the way so the steam they give off stays with them and the stack at the bottom is still soft at the end of a meal.

Also known as a roti dabba, chapati dabba, casserole, hot pot or peetal roti box.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass roti box with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.
How was it made?
  • Hand Hammered

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 600 g across a box and a lid of this depth is sheet brass with weight in it, and the dimples are struck into the metal rather than rolled into a skin over it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The dimples are struck by hand, so their rows go out of step in different places on every box, and the mirror on the lid is polished to a slightly different depth each time.

Is it tin lined?

No, the inside is bare brass. Use it for rotis coming straight off the tawa and empty it before the night is out rather than letting them cool in it.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. It is built for a dry stack of rotis. Curd or achar sitting against bare brass will stain the wall and pick up a metallic taste inside a few hours, lid on or lid off.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the mirror off the lid and leave the dimpled body grey and blotchy. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry both parts before the lid goes back on.

How do I lift the lid with no knob?

By the edge. The dome overhangs the collar by a few millimetres right the way round, so a thumb and forefinger get under the rim at any point, which is easier with oily hands than a small knob is.
