Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The whole surface has been cut back before the black went on. Between ruled rings at the mouth, the neck and the foot, the brass is hatched into a matte gold ground, and over it run leaf-shaped panels outlined in black, each one filled with a flowering vine. The panels on the belly are wider than the ones on the neck and the vine inside them is drawn at a different scale, so the two halves do not simply repeat each other. Black rings circle the trumpet mouth in unequal widths, thin next to thick. The domed foot carries the same panels shrunk to fit, and the inside of the mouth is black right down to the rim.

What is it?

A table vase is the upright vessel sized for a console, a mantel or a dining table, tall enough to hold a long stem upright but narrow at the neck so a few flowers still look arranged.

Also known as a guldasta, phooldan, black nakashi vase, pital flower vase or console vase.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The black is a surface fill sitting in cut lines, and under it the wall is brass right through at 2,000 g. Put it on a kitchen scale and the number tells you the same thing.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The panel layout will match. The exact run of the vine inside each panel will not, because it is cut freehand into the ground before the black goes in, and no two vases fill the same way.

How big is it really?

We have not measured it, so the page carries no width or height. That is deliberate. An estimate a couple of centimetres out is worse than an honest gap, particularly for a piece going onto a shelf that is already full. The weight above is measured. Ask and we will put a tape to this one.

Will it tarnish?

The gold ground darkens the way bare brass always does, and unevenly, because the hatching holds more air than a flat surface. The black lines stay black. Use a dry cloth on the gold and nothing on the black.

Will the black rub off?

Not from dusting or a dry cloth. It will come away if you take metal polish or a scouring pad to it, because polish cuts the fill out of the shallow lines faster than it brightens the brass.

Can I put water in it?

Use a liner. Water standing against the inside wall works into the cut lines from behind and lifts the fill over time. A glass tube or a plastic sleeve down the neck keeps the stems wet and the vase dry.

How do I clean the black lines?

A soft dry brush, the sort you would use on a keyboard, lifts dust out of the hatching without touching the fill. Nothing wet, nothing abrasive, and no polish anywhere near the pattern.
