Estimated, not a guarantee. Dispatched from Guwahati, Monday to Saturday.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The relief does not stop at the saddle. Foliage runs over both flanks and down the haunch, and a plain disc boss sits at the centre of the saddle panel where the pattern breaks. The horns are ridged in fine rings along their whole length and rake back over the ears instead of curving up. Neck ornament hangs in three tiers, beads, then bells, then a row of leaf pendants, and the metal under them stays dark where a cloth cannot reach.

What is it?

Nandi faces the shrine rather than the room, and a murti of him is cast in the couchant pose, weight on the folded forelegs, head raised, with the harness and saddle cloth carrying most of the ornament.

Also known as a nandi bail murti, basava idol, shiva bull statue, pital nandi or nandikeshwara murti.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Nandi murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 1,000 g in a piece that fits both hands is a density a plated casting cannot reach, and the relief on the flanks is cut into the metal rather than pressed into a coating over it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The sculpt is the same every time, the shading is not. How dark the recesses read depends on how long the piece has been out of the polishing shop, and it deepens further on your shelf.

How tall is it really?

We have not put a tape to it, so there is no height on this page and we will not print an estimate. The weight is the number we do have, and on a cast figure it tells you more than height does, because two murtis of the same height can differ by a kilo. If the height decides it, write to us and we will measure this one before you order.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Yes, the brass is bare. The work is in the drying. Foliage covers both flanks and water sits in every cut, so go over it with a dry cloth and let it stand somewhere airy afterwards.

Why are the recesses darker than the rest?

Brass darkens first where air sits still and a cloth cannot reach, so the deepest cuts grey before the raised metal does. Lemon and salt will lift it, but the relief reads flatter once every recess is bright.
