Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Five tiers step up the stem, each one a ring of pointed cups cast as a single flower, and each tier smaller than the one under it, so the lamp tapers as it rises. Turned knops separate the tiers and hold them far enough apart that a lit cup is clear of the one above it. Every cup runs out to a point at the rim, which is where the wick lies, and the points of one tier fall between those of the next. A peacock stands at the top with its tail up in a beaded fan. The metal is polished yellow brass from the foot to the bird, with no plating and no grey cast to it.

What is it?

A layered diya is an oil lamp built with two or more tiers of wick cups stacked on one stem, so a single lamp throws light at several heights at once instead of standing as a row of separate diyas on a shelf.

Also known as a tiered lamp, layered deep, deepstambh, pital deepam or multi-tier peacock lamp.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass layered diya
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 3,500 g the weight is in the cast cups and the turned stem. A plated lamp of the same height would be sheet metal over a hollow core and would rock on the shelf.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The cups are cast in rings and cleaned by hand, so the points sit at slightly different angles on every tier and the polish reads differently on each one.

Is this the same as a standing diya?

It is a standing diya with tiers. A plain standing diya carries one pan at the top; here five rings of cups climb the stem, so one lamp lights at five heights.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Wipe each cup out while it is still warm, working from the top tier down so the drips fall into cups you have yet to reach. A dry cloth on the stem afterwards is enough.

Can I use ghee instead of oil?

Yes, and it is the usual choice for a lamp like this. Ghee sets in the cups as they cool, so wipe them out the same evening rather than letting the residue harden.

How many wicks does it hold in total?

We have not printed a total yet. The cups are being counted tier by tier from the lamp in hand, because the rear cups on each ring sit behind the stem in the photograph and cannot be counted from it.

Will oil run down from one tier to the next?

Each cup is a closed well with a raised lip, so oil stays where it is poured. Overfill one and it will run to the tier below, so fill to just under the lip and wipe the stem after.
