Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The rim is the point of the pari form. It turns out almost flat, so a bowl can be picked up by the lip without a thumb going into the dal. Below it the wall drops straight and carries a band of running floral scroll.

What is it?

A katori is the small round bowl that stands on a thali and keeps dal, curd or a wet sabzi off the plate.

Also known as a vati, katora, dal bowl or peetal katori.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 450 g for two bowls this size is sheet brass with weight in it, and the scroll band is cut into the wall rather than lying on top of a coating that would flake at the rim.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The scroll band starts and finishes at a slightly different place on every bowl, and the brass darkens from the day it comes out of the wrapping.

Is it tin lined?

No. This is bare brass inside. Keep sour food - lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle - out of it, and serve rather than store.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

Serve them, do not store them. A katori of curd or a spoon of pickle through a meal is normal; left standing in bare brass overnight it will mark the floor of the bowl and taste of metal.

Can these go in the dishwasher?

No. Machine detergent leaves brass grey and it settles white into the scroll band on the lower wall, where a sponge cannot easily reach. Hand wash, rinse and dry each bowl instead.

How many do I need?

One katori per wet dish per person. A pair covers a dal and a sabzi for one, so a table of four that puts two wet dishes out wants four pairs rather than two.
