Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The five leaves at the mouth are cast with a raised midrib and a fan of side veins, and the two outer ones curl over at the tips. Under a beaded collar and a band of triangles, the belly carries a crowd of small figures in relief standing either side of a lingam under an arch, with rows of wave lines running beneath them. Across the foot there is a raised inscription in Devanagari script. The back is flat.

What is it?

A kalash is the round-bellied, narrow-necked pot set at the centre of a rite and dressed with mango leaves at the mouth. Cast flat as a panel, the same form becomes a piece to stand or hang rather than to fill.

Also known as a purna kumbh, kalasha, kalasam or pital kalash plaque.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass kalash relief panel
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and cast in one piece. A flat panel this size at 850 g is thick metal, which is why the figures along the belly hold their edges instead of reading as a shallow stamping.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The relief will. How dark the recesses sit will not, because the figure band and the wave lines take polish unevenly and each panel is finished by hand after it comes out of the mould.

Is this the same as a pooja kalash?

No. A pooja kalash is a pot you fill with water and dress with leaves and a coconut. The panel is cast flat and closed, so it stands for the kalash rather than doing its job.

How do I clean it after pooja?

A dry cloth over the raised areas is usually enough. If roli or ash has settled into the wave lines and the figure band, use a soft dry brush rather than water, which sits in the deeper relief.

Can I fill it with water?

No. There is no opening anywhere in it. The mouth and the leaves are cast solid, so keep water, rice and the coconut in a separate pot and let the panel stand behind them.
