Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The wall is cut through in three registers. Under the scalloped rim runs a lattice of linked rings and scrolls, open enough to see straight through; below that a painted band of red and cream scallops closes the wall; below that again the metal is pierced with small lozenges in rows. Red is carried out onto the points of the rim, so the scallops read as petals from above.

What is it?

A fruit bowl is the wide open bowl kept out on a dining or console table, shallow enough that what is in it can be seen and reached without lifting anything out of the way.

Also known as a fruit basket, centrepiece bowl, table bowl, jaali bowl or peetal fruit bowl.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass fruit bowl
How do I look after it?
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and nothing else. Dry it straight away.
  • The colour is a surface layer over the metal. Lemon, salt, tamarind and brass polish all lift it — the same things that bring bare brass back to a shine will take the pattern off this piece. Keep them away from the painted areas.
  • Any bare brass on the foot, rim or underside can be cleaned the normal way with lemon and salt. Work around the colour, not over it.
  • Do not soak it, do not scrub it, and keep steel wool and scouring pads away from it entirely.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Keep it out of long direct sunlight. Applied colour fades where bare brass would only darken.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. It comes to 500 g, and a good part of the metal has been cut away to make the openings, so what is left in the wall is heavier than it looks.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The piercing will match. The colour is brushed on by hand, so the red on the rim points varies in reach and the cream in the scrolls goes on thicker in some places than others.

How big is it really?

Not yet measured, and we would rather say so than estimate. A screen flattens scale badly, and a small piece and a large one photograph much the same. The weight above is real. Tell us the space you are filling and we will measure the piece and tell you whether it fits.

Will it tarnish?

The bare brass foot and the cut edges will darken. The painted bands hold their colour, so the bowl ages unevenly, going warmer at the foot while the top stays much as it is.

Can I put fruit straight in it?

Put a cloth or a small plate in first. The wall is cut through in three bands, so anything soft or damp presses into the openings and marks the paint from the inside.

Will the paint chip?

It can, on the rim points, which are the first thing a sleeve catches. Wash it by hand in warm water without soaking it, and keep polish and scourers away from the colour.
