Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The lid is where the work is. A band of flowers is cut clean through the cone so light passes, and each cut flower is painted, pink, blue and green over the brass, with the leaves and stems following the openings. Above the pierced band the cone is left plain except for one engraved leaf run under the turned top. The bowl below carries a painted floral band of the same hand, and the foot spreads out plain and polished.

What is it?

A decorative bowl is made to be looked at rather than eaten from, sized for a console or a centre table, and often lidded so it can hold small things out of sight.

Also known as a decorative bowl, lidded bowl, jaali bowl, katora or peetal bowl.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass bowl
  • 1 pierced brass lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and nothing else. Dry it straight away.
  • The colour is a surface layer over the metal. Lemon, salt, tamarind and brass polish all lift it — the same things that bring bare brass back to a shine will take the pattern off this piece. Keep them away from the painted areas.
  • Any bare brass on the foot, rim or underside can be cleaned the normal way with lemon and salt. Work around the colour, not over it.
  • Do not soak it, do not scrub it, and keep steel wool and scouring pads away from it entirely.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Keep it out of long direct sunlight. Applied colour fades where bare brass would only darken.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. Bowl, lid and foot together come to 1,000 g. The colour sits on the surface as paint over brass, so the metal underneath is the same all the way through.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The pattern will match. Every flower is painted by hand into the pierced band, so the pink and the blue fall on different petals and the brush edges land differently on each lid.

How big is it really?

We have not measured it, so the page carries no width or height. That is deliberate. An estimate a couple of centimetres out is worse than an honest gap, particularly for a piece going onto a shelf that is already full. The weight above is measured. Ask and we will put a tape to this one.

Will it tarnish?

The plain brass will darken with time. The painted areas hold their colour and the pierced band is what people look at, so most of the change shows on the foot and the lid crown.

Does the lid lift off?

Yes. It lifts straight off and sits back down on the bowl rim. Nothing hinges and nothing screws, and the knob is there to take the weight when you raise it.

Can I keep sweets in it?

Keep dry things in it, wrapped. Bare brass and paint are not surfaces to eat from, so supari, small keepsakes and jewellery are the sensible use for the inside.
