Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Both animals stand on all four feet with the trunk swung up and the tip curled back, and the two are not mirror images of each other, the ears and the fall of the blanket differ from one to the next. A ridged blanket runs over each back and ends in a scalloped edge, with a small cast tassel hanging at the hip. Eyes, brow and toenails are cut in as short lines. At 600 g for the two they are hand-sized rather than shelf-filling.

What is it?

An elephant figure is a cast animal kept as a table or shelf piece, usually with the trunk turned upward, and it is bought in twos as often as singly because the pair reads as a facing set.

Also known as a haathi, hathi, elephant showpiece, elephant figurine or peetal haathi.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and cast rather than pressed. Two hollow pressings of this size would come nowhere near 600 g for the pair, and the weight sits in the legs and the body where a casting puts it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The pair you get will be the same two models, but the cast surface takes polish differently on every piece, so one may run brighter on the back and the other duller in the folds of the blanket.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. Bare brass goes dull and then brown, and on a cast piece it happens first in the cut lines of the blanket. A dry cloth on the backs and heads is enough to keep the high points bright.

How many do I need?

Two is the standard, and the two here already face each other, so one set finishes a console or a mandir step. A second set is bought when a long shelf needs the ends anchored rather than the middle.
