Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Each figure sits on a lotus cast flat rather than domed, the petals opening out into a disc wider than the figure itself with a punched dot in every petal. Both have four arms and a stepped conical crown. Laxmi lifts a bud in each upper hand and turns a lower palm out over the knee, and Ganesh holds a small hooked implement in each raised hand. The two elephants are cast without bases and stand on their own four feet, trunks curled up over the forehead, each with a worked cloth over the back and down the flanks. They come to about half the height of the seated figures.

What is it?

Laxmi and Ganesh are installed together for Diwali pooja, each seated on a lotus with four arms, and the two are bought as one pair far more often than either is bought alone.

Also known as a Lakshmi Ganesh murti set, Diwali pooja idols, pital Laxmi Ganpati or Ganesh Lakshmi set.

What is in the box?

  • 1 brass Ganesh murti
  • 2 brass elephants
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The four pieces come to 2,100 g together, which for figures this size is cast brass and not a shell. Weigh the two murtis on their own and the elephants after, and the split tells you the same thing.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The forms repeat. The finish does not, quite. Each piece is polished by hand, so the lotus petals and the elephant cloths can come up brighter on one piece than another within the same set of four.

How tall is it really?

No height here, because nobody has measured this casting yet, and a guess two centimetres out is worse than a blank. Go by the weight in the spec above; that is the figure that separates a solid murti from a light one. Ask us and we will put a tape to the piece and come back to you.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Bare brass takes water. Dry both figures straight after, and turn them over, because water gets under the flat lotus petals and sits there where a cloth on the top face will never reach it.

How many do I need?

One set covers a Diwali pooja for a household. The pair is the unit and the elephants flank it, so nothing here is counted by the head or bought in multiples the way katoris are.

Do the elephants come with it?

Both do. Four pieces ship together, two murtis and two elephants, and because the elephants have no base of their own they can be set close in or well out from the pair.

Are the murtis fixed to the lotus bases?

Each is cast in one with its base. The lotus is not a separate plate, so nothing lifts off and nothing needs lining up when the set comes out of the box.

Will they darken over time?

Unlacquered brass does darken, first in the recesses and then over the raised work. Lemon and salt bring the shine back if you want it, or leave it and the surface settles into a warmer tone.
