Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The pan is wide and shallow with one spout pulled out to a squared point at the side, and a band of fine vertical strokes runs the whole way round under its rim. The foot is turned in three swelling rings, each edged with beading, and the middle one is punched with a row of triangles and dots. The peacock stands on a small baluster at the centre of the pan, tail curling up behind its head, wing feathers cut in short strokes.

What is it?

A figural diya sets the oil cup on a cast stand and puts a bird or a deity above it, so the lamp reads as an object on the shelf even before it is lit. The cup itself holds oil and a cotton wick.

Also known as a mor diya, mayur deep, peacock lamp or pital deepak.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass peacock diya
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 450 g the pedestal carries most of the weight, which is what stops a lamp with a bird on top from going over when the pan is full. A plated one would be light and top-heavy.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The form will. The peacock is cast and then filed, so the feather strokes on the wing and the curl of the tail differ a little, and the punched band on the foot never lands twice the same.

Is this the same as a standing diya?

No. A standing diya is a tall lamp raised on a long stem for a doorway or a floor. The pan here sits low on a short pedestal, at the height of a shelf, and it takes a single wick rather than several.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Wipe the pan warm before the oil sets. Soot gathers at the spout and at the foot of the bird, and warm water with a soft brush lifts it. Dry the punched band on the pedestal properly.

Can I use ghee instead of oil?

Yes. The pan is wide and shallow, so a spoonful spreads thin and burns down quickly. Top it up during a long pooja rather than filling it to the rim and letting it spill at the spout.
