Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The bird stands on a knopped pedestal at the back, wings cut in rows of short strokes, a hooked beak curving down over a bead of a chin and a tail that rises behind it in three heavy plumes. In front of it the oil pan is a plain boat, drawn out to one point at the far end where the wick lies, and left smooth inside so the level of the oil is easy to read. The base spreads into cast leaf lobes.

What is it?

A decorative diya is an oil lamp built as a figure or a form rather than as a plain cup, with the pan carried by a cast stand so the lamp holds its place on a shelf unlit.

Also known as a parrot deepam, bird oil lamp, pital diya, agal vilakku or decorative deepak.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass parrot diya
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass. 650 g in a lamp this small is the tell, and the feather strokes on the wing run into the metal rather than sitting on a skin over it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. Each casting is filed and polished by hand, so the beak, the crest and the plumes come out a little different, and the brass darkens from the day it is unwrapped.

Can I use ghee instead of oil?

Yes. The pan is open and shallow, so ghee melts through quickly once the wick is lit and sets again as it cools. Wipe the pan out before the lamp goes back on the shelf.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Wipe the pan while it is still warm and the oil lifts in one pass. For the bird, a soft dry brush gets into the feather cuts, and lemon and salt is for the plain surfaces only.

Is the bird a peacock?

It reads as a parrot: the beak hooks down and the crest curls back, where a peacock in cast brass carries a fanned crown and a spread train. The same form is sold under both names.
