Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Cattle walk in a single line right round the four walls, each one nose to tail with the next and a small round pot standing between them. The lid repeats them in rows, filled out with rosettes and leaf shapes so no ground is left plain. Only the recesses hold the dark; the raised backs and horns are rubbed bright. A flat lug at the front of the lid gives a thumb something to lift by.

What is it?

A jewellery box is the small lidded container kept on a dressing table for rings, studs, bangles and loose stones, deep enough to take a handful of pieces and close over them.

Also known as a brass trinket box, keepsake box, peetal dabba or dressing table box.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass jewellery box with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The box comes to 1,800 g, which is what walls of this thickness weigh in brass; a plated shell the same size would be a fraction of that. A kitchen scale settles it in a minute.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, not identical. The relief is worked and finished by hand, so the depth of the cattle and the amount of dark left in the recesses shift a little from one box to the next.

Will it mark what I keep inside?

Bare brass can leave a faint dark smudge on soft silver and on anything pressed against a wall for months. Keep pieces in their pouches, or lay a square of felt on the floor of the box.

How big is it inside?

No internal dimension here, because none has been taken, and we will not estimate one from the outside of a photograph. Ask us what you need it to hold and we will measure it.

Will the brass go dark over time?

Yes, and the finish is built for it. The recesses are darkened already and the raised metal dulls slowly with handling. A dry cloth on the high points brings them back; keep lemon and salt off it.
