Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Each of the four stands on its own oval base, and the tops of the bases are cross-hatched like cloth while the rims carry a run of small cast flowers. Ram raises his right hand and keeps a bow upright at his side with a quiver of arrows behind the shoulder, Lakshman carries the same bow and quiver but no raised hand, and Sita holds a flower in her lifted right hand. Hanuman kneels on one knee on the smallest base, hands pressed together, with a round boss cast into the base in front of him. The finish is matte across all four, so the crowns and the strings of jewellery read as line rather than as shine.

What is it?

A Ram Darbar is the court of Ram, read as four figures together, Ram and Sita at the centre, Lakshman at the side and Hanuman kneeling in front, and a household keeps the group whole rather than buying the figures singly.

Also known as a Ram Parivar murti set, Ram Sita Lakshman idols, pital Ram darbar or Shri Ram statue set.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. Two thousand grams spread across four figures of this height is what cast brass weighs, and a resin or plated set would be a fraction of it. Weigh the four together and the number settles it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The four forms are the same every time. The matte finish is what moves, sitting a shade warmer or paler from one run to the next, and the fine cut work on the crowns can read sharper on one figure than another.

How tall is it really?

We have not put a tape to it, so there is no height on this page and we will not print an estimate. The weight is the number we do have, and on a cast figure it tells you more than height does, because two murtis of the same height can differ by a kilo. If the height decides it, write to us and we will measure this one before you order.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Bare brass takes water. Dry each figure straight after, and get a cloth into the cross-hatched tops of the bases, where water sits in the grid longer than it does anywhere on the figures.

How many do I need?

The four make one darbar and ship together, so a single set is the whole court. Some homes add a separate Hanuman facing the group from a distance; nothing inside the set needs doubling.

Do the four come apart?

They were never joined. Each figure has its own base and stands on its own, so the spacing on your shelf is yours to set rather than fixed by the casting.

Why is the finish matte and not shiny?

Superfine work is finished matte so the cut lines stay readable. A mirror polish throws light back off the crowns and the strings of beads, and the carving that the grade is paying for disappears into the shine.

Which figure is which?

Ram is the centre figure, right hand raised with a bow at his side. Sita holds a flower in her raised hand, Lakshman carries the second bow and quiver, and Hanuman is the one kneeling on the smallest base.
