Estimated, not a guarantee. Dispatched from Guwahati, Monday to Saturday.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Colour is used only at the top. The crest above the crown is filled orange, the crown itself brown with an orange band under it, and the eyes are picked out pale against bare metal; everything below the tusks is left as it came from the mould. The leaf is not one leaf but a stack of them, tips showing at the shoulders and sides, and the hanger is a scroll turned over at the top with the hole through it.

What is it?

A Ganesha on leaf is a flat plaque in which the elephant-headed figure is cast or raised on the form of a peepal leaf, hung at a doorway or in a hall. We describe the practice; we make no claim about outcomes.

Also known as a leaf ganesh, patta ganesh, coloured ganesh or pital ganesh.

What is in the box?

How do I look after it?
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and nothing else. Dry it straight away.
  • The colour is a surface layer over the metal. Lemon, salt, tamarind and brass polish all lift it — the same things that bring bare brass back to a shine will take the pattern off this piece. Keep them away from the painted areas.
  • Any bare brass on the foot, rim or underside can be cleaned the normal way with lemon and salt. Work around the colour, not over it.
  • Do not soak it, do not scrub it, and keep steel wool and scouring pads away from it entirely.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Keep it out of long direct sunlight. Applied colour fades where bare brass would only darken.
How was it made?

Questions about this piece

Is the brass solid or plated?

The brass is solid under the colour, cast and then painted. The paint is a surface layer, not a metal coating, and the 800 g on the scale is the casting itself.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The colour is brushed on by hand, so the reach of the orange on the crest and the depth of the brown on the crown vary, and no two crowns are shaded the same way.

Where should it be placed?

A leaf plaque of this kind is usually hung at the entrance, in a hall, or above the mandir shelf where it faces the room. Households differ on this and we would not tell you your practice.

Is it solid or hollow?

Solid cast metal, flat at the back, with the figure raised at the front. Nothing is packed behind the relief; the weight you feel is brass, and the colour adds none of it.

Will the colour come off?

Not with ordinary handling. It is a surface layer over the metal, so lemon, salt and brass polish will lift it. A soft dry cloth is the whole routine, and the polish stays for the bare metal only.
