Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The lid carries no knob. It is a smooth dome that drops over a double turned ring at the neck, so it is lifted by the edge with a thumb and finger. Hammering runs in rows over the body and stops where the wall turns in at the foot.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A storage dabba is the lidded brass canister that keeps dry kitchen staples out of the air, tall enough to stand a scoop in.

Also known as a dabba, barni, storage jar or peetal kitchen dabba.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass storage dabba with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.
How was it made?
  • Hand Hammered

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 550 g the wall has body in it, and a plated shell of the same height would flex under a thumb pressed into the side. Put it on a kitchen scale the day it lands.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The hammering is struck by hand, so the size and spacing of the marks and the depth of the polish shift a little from one dabba to the next.

Is it tin lined?

No, it is unlined. Dry contents only. The moment something damp goes in and stays, brass marks, and that mark is difficult to lift afterwards.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Keep it to dry things. Anything sour left standing against bare brass takes on a metallic edge and leaves a mark inside that scrubbing will not lift.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

No. Hand wash with a mild liquid and a soft sponge, then dry it fully, lid and body apart. Water left standing in the hammered dimples is what leaves the spotting people mistake for pitting.
