Two round pillars rise from the plate and carry an arch over the figures. Each pillar head is worked as a makara, the creature cut at the springing of a temple arch, and the arch itself is built up in three bands, beaded on the outside and ribbed on the inside. Ram stands at the centre under the crown of the arch with a bow at his side and his right hand raised. Hanuman kneels at the left front corner with his hands lifted, small enough that his crown clears Lakshman's knee.

What it is

In a Ram Darbar the four figures are always read in the same order, Ram and Sita at the centre, Lakshman to one side and Hanuman low and kneeling, which is what separates the group from a single Ram murti.

Care and use

Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.

Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.

To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.

Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.

Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The plate, the pillars, the arch and the four figures come to 4,000 g together, which is cast brass and nothing else. Put it on a kitchen scale the day it arrives and the number settles it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The casting is the same. The finish is not. How dark the recesses under the arch and inside the folds of cloth read varies from one piece to the next, so the contrast can look softer or stronger than the frame.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Bare brass takes water, but the arch makes it awkward. Water runs off the top band into the space behind the figures and stays there, so tip it forward and dry that hollow before it dries into pale marks.

Do the figures lift off the plate?

No. Plate, pillars, arch and figures are one casting. Nothing is pinned or glued, nothing can be lost, and the spacing between the four is fixed as it left the mould.

What are the heads on the pillars?

A makara at each capital, the creature carved where a temple arch springs from its pillar. On this piece they face outward and carry the weight of the arch band above them.

Will the dark finish wear off with handling?

On the high points, slowly. The raised brass on the crowns and shoulders will brighten where hands touch it while the recesses stay dark, which is how an antique finish is meant to age. Do not chase it with polish.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight.
